True Food News: MERCURY REPORT [AK] State scientists said tests found
LOW levels of mercury in Alaska halibut OVER 50 pounds, ling cod,
yelloweye rockfish, spiny dogfish, and shark, but all of the fish were
generally safe to eat. The state advised, however, that pregnant women
and children under age 6 "should consider whether they should eat large
quantities" of the largest and oldest of the fish, which tend to
accumulate more mercury. For more on Alaska's fish monitoring program, go
to http://www.dec.state.ak.us/eh/vet/fish.htm (SOURCE: Pacific Fishing
Magazine, April 2007). Wild Pacific Salmon have naturally low-no mercury
levels due to their short 2-7 year life cycle. The also live at the top
of the ocean, where HEAVY metals do not collect. Our salmon have the
lowest levels of mercury in the industry (and therefore, the world) with
<0.0500 ppm as tested by Food Safety Net Services. To have your own level
of heavy metals tested, contact Dr. Kari Vernon 480.905.1883 (Scottsdale)
or Dr. Jacqueline Carboni 602.508.1834 (Phoenix).

We are looking forward to the Los Ranchos, Corrales & Nob Hill Growers
Markets in the Albuquerque area this summer. We'll be back in New Mexico
with lots of salmon and beef for the season opener at Los Ranchos on
Saturday, May 5 from 7-11am.

Our thanks to all for eating Wild Salmon!

Eat Well,
Kenny & Brenna Aschbacher~The Fishhuggers
